Guides for Guelph trades owners who'd rather do the maths first

Three long-form guides written for Guelph trades and local service owners. Each one gives you a method you can apply yourself, with worked numbers, whether or not you ever hire us.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

These guides are for Guelph owners who want to understand their own marketing before deciding whether to pay anyone for it. Each one is long enough to be genuinely useful and specific to how a mid-size Ontario city behaves. They include worked numbers you can redo with your own figures.

Drawing a service area around Guelph

The service-area planning guide shows you how to work out where your trade should and shouldn't market. It starts with your job list, turns it into a simple map by postal code, and helps you decide whether Puslinch, Guelph/Eramosa or Kitchener belong in your plans.

What you'll learn:

  • how to sort a year of jobs by area and margin in under an hour;
  • why drive time matters more than distance on a map;
  • how to set your Google Business Profile service area honestly;
  • when it's worth writing content about a neighbourhood, and when it isn't.

It's a sensible place to start if you've never looked at where your profitable work actually comes from.

Setting a Google Ads budget for a mid-size city

The mid-size city ad budget guide explains why ad budgets in Guelph behave differently from those in Toronto or Ottawa. It walks through break-even maths, search volume, seasonality and the point where extra spending stops buying useful calls.

What you'll learn:

  • how to calculate the most you can afford to pay for a lead;
  • why doubling an ad budget in a city of 144,000 rarely doubles your calls;
  • how to plan spending around Guelph's seasonal swings;
  • the warning signs that your account is spending money outside your market.

Read it before you raise your ad budget, or before you let anyone else raise it for you.

Running a review and referral routine

The review and referral routine guide is a step-by-step system for turning finished jobs into reviews and repeat names. In a city where people ask friends and neighbours before they search, this is often the most valuable marketing a trade can own.

What you'll learn:

  • when to ask for a review, by trade and job type;
  • what to say, with templates you can copy;
  • how to reply to a harsh review without making it worse;
  • how to thank referrers without breaking Google's rules.

It's the guide most owners can act on the same day.

How these guides fit with our services

Each guide stands on its own. They also explain the thinking behind our work. The service-area guide connects to our local search service. The ad budget guide is the method behind our Google Ads work. And the review guide underpins our reviews and referrals service.

If you read a guide and want help applying it, the contact page explains how to reach us. If you'd rather do it yourself, that's fine too. That's why they're here.

Who writes these guides

The guides are written under the direction of Ali Sedighi, MBA, who leads Guelph.Marketing and has spent 17+ years in digital marketing. The methods come from building marketing for trades, much of it in heating and cooling, and they've been adapted here to the scale and seasons of a mid-size Ontario city. They're reviewed when the underlying sources change, and each guide shows the date it was last updated.

We'll add new guides when owners keep asking us the same question. If there's a topic you think belongs here, mention it when you get in touch.

A note on sources

Where the guides use Guelph statistics, such as population or housing mix, they link to the source, usually Statistics Canada's 2021 Census or the City of Guelph's open data. Where they give example numbers, those are illustrations for you to replace with your own, not claims about any real business.

Frequently asked questions

Are these guides free to use?

Yes. They're written to be useful on their own. Use the methods, adapt the templates and share them with your office manager.

Which guide should I read first?

If you're not sure where your profitable jobs come from, start with the service-area guide. If your calls are fine but uneven, read the ad budget guide. If referrals already drive your business, start with the reviews guide.

Do the guides apply outside Guelph?

The methods work in any mid-size Canadian city, but the examples, neighbourhood names and nearby townships are Guelph-specific.
